It's been awhile since my last contemporary book release. So I'm happy to announe that The Story of Us, an NA contemporary, will release on February 9, 2017! I can't wait to share Maverick and Alieya's story with you!
Every life is made of thousands of them, each one strung together with the next. Some are yellow and happy, some are blue and sad, and some…
Some wipe out color altogether.
“I love you,” is what I should have told Maverick.
“I’m still fighting.”
Instead I just watched him leave.
Now my husband, my everything is battling for each breath, and all I can do is stare at the machines as the clock ticks off precious minutes.
The doctors said the first twenty-four hours are critical—but every moment is critical.
You never know which will be your last.
This is our story, and I’m not ready for it to end.
FINALLY!!! The wait is over, y'all. The Soul (Spirit Trilogy #3) is here!
I hope you enjoy it! Happy reading!

When you hear the name Stephanie Meyer you automatically think Twilight, the #1 New York Times bestselling paranormal novel. You may think other things as well, depending on your opinion of the book. Like it or not, Stephanie Meyer is one of those authors readers and authors alike love to hate. E. L. James is another one.
But this post isn't about my opinion of Twilight or Ms. Meyer's writing style. It's about what she did for the writing community by taking the publishing leap of faith. It's about what she did for me.
True, I cannot speak for all authors and this post won't apply to some, but I can guarantee I'm not alone in my assessment. You see, I've always been an avid reader, losing myself in books of every genre. I couldn't get enough of Lurlene McDaniel, R.L. Stine, Stephen King, Danielle Steele, and Mary Higgins Clark just to name a few. I looked up to those authors, awed by how they could take 26 letters, mix them up, and create a story. As a young person, I tried my hand at the craft and felt the sting of disappointment that what I wrote didn't hold a candle to what they wrote. It was clear to me from that moment that writing was for people much smarter than me. Grammar Nazis with Literature degrees.
But then in walks Stephanie Meyer. A stay-at-home mom with no writing background except a degree in English. Like me, she felt that becoming an author was a long shot, an unachievable dream. We all know what happened next.
Stephanie Meyer inspired writers, including me, to write. To take the plunge, regardless of the possible outcome. Maybe we'd hit the top like she did. Maybe we'd fall on our faces. It didn't matter, because we tried. We swallowed our fears, our ideas of not being good enough, and wrote anyway.
Some people wrote because they wanted to be like her. They loved Twilight, and with the authors' success, they dove into writing their own worlds. Other people hated Twilight, and thought "I can write better than that!" And so they set out to write.
See, the point isn't about whether you loved or hated Twilight. It's that Twilight inspired these authors to do something they only dreamed about and turn it into reality.
I've had many inspirations to write, and Stephanie Meyer is certainly on that list. Thank you, Stephanie.
It feels like forever ago I started my first book, The Spirit. Now, finally, I finished the series. In a previous blog post I talked about how bittersweet this is, but on the flip side, I'm excited to start some new projects and meet new characters! I hope you are too! So, without further ado, I give you the release date for The Soul (Spirit Trilogy #3)!
Music has power. An incredible amount of power to make us fall in love, feel sorrowful, and remember the past. It grips you, and when you find that perfect song, that grip on you doesn't let go. Just like a good book.
I don't think I'm alone when I say music inspires me in my writing. I'm constantly listening to it and building playlists. I absolutely love Spotify's Discover Weekly. I've found so many great songs I may not have heard otherwise. My newest find is "Heads/Tails" by Hotspur. I'd never heard of Hotspur until three days ago.
I have a great appreciation for music. I listen to everything, and by everything, I mean EVERYTHING! My playlists has music from today, yesterday, and 200 years ago. I like rock, emo, country, pop, classical, you name it. Yep, even boy bands. (Sorry, Kata!) It depends on the mood of the scene I'm writing.
When I write, I see the scene play out in my head like a movie...sort of. I think in pictures. So like how movies use music to up the emotional ante of a scene, I use it in very much the same way. For example, The Body has a dark, demonic feel to the book. It has tons of action between supernaturals. So I used a lot of music from the band Red. They set the mood for me. Many of the scenes when Lucas and Carrie are stargazing, I use the classical stylings of Yiruma. For Love Always, Kate, I needed deeply emotional music, so I turned to Rascal Flatts.
On the practical side, I use music to drown out the world around me. Blaring music. I write with my earbuds in, and the sound turned up as loud as I can get it. It helps me to focus and stay focused, especially with four kids, a husband, and pets running rampant around the house.
If you are interested in checking out any of my playlists, I have them on my website. I'd also love if you want to follow me on Spotifiy. I have playlists for the whole Love Always Series and the Spirit Trilogy, as well as for Breaking Through, public on Spotifiy. A fan also made one for Love Always, Kate on YouTube. So make sure to check that out!
